Applied Materials Names Veteran Technology Executive Mark Pinto to Lead New Business and New Products Group

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 9, 2004--Applied Materials, Inc., the world's largest supplier of wafer fabrication solutions to the global semiconductor industry, announced today that it has appointed Mark Pinto as senior vice president of the company's New Business and New Products Group.

Pinto will be responsible for overseeing the company's technology direction, product roadmap development and communication, and reviewing new business opportunities for the company.

Prior to joining Applied Materials, Pinto held several executive positions at Agere Systems. He most recently served as vice president of divisions engaged in digital and analog Integrated Circuit (IC) products for network infrastructure applications. In these roles his responsibilities included strategy, marketing and R&D for products focused on communications. Pinto also served as chief technology officer for Agere through the period that it was spun off from Lucent Technologies, and was responsible for all central R&D in IC processes, packaging and design as well as optoelectronics. His responsibilities included the former Bell Laboratories research organizations that moved to Agere.

Beginning his career at Bell Labs, Pinto led R&D programs in advanced silicon IC processes and design, as well as strategic IC development partnerships for several generations of CMOS technology. His assignments included directing the Silicon Electronics Research Laboratory which made many significant contributions in areas fundamental to the progress of the IC industry. He was named a Bell Labs Fellow, the company's highest technical honor, for his work in semiconductor devices and simulation.

Pinto has been active in industry consortia, serving on the Board of Directors for the Semiconductor Research Corporation and the Technology Strategy Committee of the Semiconductor Industry Association.

He received bachelor's degrees in electrical engineering and computer science from Rensselear Polytechnic Institute and a master's degree and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Stanford University. He was elected an IEEE Fellow for his contributions to the field of semiconductor electronics.
