Applied Materials Appoints David N. K. Wang Applied Materials Asia President; Russell Ellwanger to Head Applied Global Services

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 12, 2004--Applied Materials, Inc. (Nasdaq:AMAT) announced today that David N. K. Wang, executive vice president of Applied Materials, Inc., has been appointed president of Applied Materials Asia, effective immediately. Wang will be responsible for Applied Materials' business strategy, planning and execution throughout Asia with particular focus on building infrastructure in the growing markets of China.

Wang joined Applied Materials in 1980 and has been responsible for driving the development of Applied Materials' global operations in Asia Pacific, as well as establishing the company's wholly-owned subsidiaries in Taiwan, South Korea, Singapore and the People's Republic of China. He pioneered implementation of the company's global account management structure and has been central to the development and marketing of some of the company's most significant products. Over the past year, Wang was responsible for establishing Applied Global Services (AGS) and its successful new business model, laying the foundation for Applied Materials' growth in services.

Wang was also a principal developer of the company's AME 8100(TM) and 8300 plasma etch products, as well as Applied Materials' landmark Precision 5000 CVD (chemical vapor deposition) and etch systems. The Precision 5000 was one of the industry's most successful products, and in 1993 was inducted into the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.

Russell Ellwanger, group vice president, will lead AGS, the company's service business. Prior to his role at AGS, Ellwanger was general manager of the company's Planarization Plating and Cleaning (PPC) group. Since joining Applied Materials in 1996, he has held various positions including co-general manager of the Process Diagnostics and Control Product Business Group in Israel, general manager of the Metal Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) division, managing director of the CVD Product Business Group and headed the 300mm program office.
