Applied Materials Announces Chris Belden as New Head of Global Operations

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 14, 2005--Applied Materials, Inc. (Nasdaq:AMAT) announced today that Chris Belden will join the Company as group vice president and general manager of global operations including all volume manufacturing and materials sourcing. Belden most recently was senior vice president of manufacturing for Motorola's Semiconductor Product Sector in Austin, Texas, which became known as Freescale Semiconductor in 2004.

"Chris brings extensive hands-on customer fab management and semiconductor process experience to Applied," said Mike Splinter, president and CEO of Applied Materials. "We have worked with him for many years as he built several leading fab facilities for Motorola. He has an outstanding history of manufacturing leadership and will bring a customer perspective to our factory operations and supply chain management."

In his 22 years with Motorola he held positions of increasing responsibility while managing manufacturing and operations. In Austin, he managed the process technology pipeline from research to product delivery and was responsible for all global manufacturing sites. Belden has a Bachelor of Science degree in Ceramic Engineering from Alfred University in New York, where he graduated magna cum laude. Active in the industry and the community, he has served on the Board of Directors of International Sematech and Tohoku Semiconductor. In the Austin community he has served on the board of the American Cancer Society and as chairman of Motorola's Multi-Cultural Board for Black Achievement.
